Quickies
for when you're short on time
It seems that a common answer when asked, "Why don't you enter more contests or activities?" is, "I just don't have the time."
That's totally understandable. As someone who is working and going to school, I get that, but there are plenty of things you can do with just a few minutes to spare! Here are some of my favorite activities for when I don't have much time:
Polls
I like to go to the Poll listings and sort with the newest ones first. That way I can give votes to newly created polls, and they're also polls I probably haven't seen yet!

And don't forget to send feedback to the author on their poll! Do you think the options reflect the majority of options? Does your own choice need more of an explanation? I'm sure the host of the poll would love to hear from you!
In & Outs
These are always good for a laugh and a burst of creativity! There are some that have been around for a long time:
and new ones popping up all the time!
More Ideas
Try writing a Product Review for a book, movie or video game or fill out a Mad Lib for hilarity! You can also write a review if you've got some time. A good place to look for people & items to review are "Noticing Newbies" and "Please Review" .
There are lots of options for those short on time! We all have "real life" obligations, but if we want to improve as writers, it's important to practice often, right? And these games and activities might just seem like fun, but if you're reading and thinking critically about it, you're helping yourself improve as a writer!
Always keep on writing!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (February 22, 2012)" ), discussed how to get noticed on WDC.
I think the number 1 thing that keeps me from entering as many contests and activities as I'd like is that many times, I simply can't get the story I'd love to write onto the page in time. There are also times where prompts can be too specific, or so overly generalized that it doesn't give you enough guidance as to what the contest host is looking for; both instances are tough! ~ Jay's debut novel is out now!
Yes, I've had that happen to me, too!
Sometimes it's time- don't have any, sometimes it's topic- can't do form poetry. ~ BIG BAD WOLF is Howling
I have been on WDC for seven years and during that time I have seen a lot of contest, the one I have listed has been the source of several members here. I have seen mention of the prompts from her contest in so many stories. Not all won in the contest, however they have went on to win other contests. ~ dejavu_BIG computerprobs
Thanks! I've linked the contest above!
Hi Spidey, I have entered quite a few contests in the last month but have found myself slowing down, all but two of the contests were daily.
I found that, even though some of my entries exceeded my expectations, I still find myself looking at them and thinking I could have made a better job of this or it's not quite right.
This month I am going to take the time to write some entries for monthly contests so that I can work as hard as possible to get them as good as I possibly can over a longer time frame.
I have started my own contest which keeps me busy, but I still hope to enter some dailies as well when I can, I love A Poem A Day and have been having a lot of fun with it as poetry is a totaly new experience for me.
Kind Regards

Sounds like you have a great handle on dividing your time well to get the most out of your writing and Writing.Com!
Good questions. I would have to say I enter more now but that's because my first year on WDC I only posted a couple of poems and nothing else. However, I may enter less now than I did during my second year because there aren't many novel contests on here and I'm trying to focus on my novels to one day submit for publication.
As for why I don't enter. Mostly it's either the prompt at the time doesn't catch my interest or I do start something but life/work/etc get in the way and I don't get it done in time. I'm a terrible procrastinator with stories for contests on here and often write right up to the deadline.
