The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.~~Helen Keller
Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.~~Andre Gide

Those things that nature denied to human sight, she revealed to the eyes of the soul.~~Ovid
Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.

Challenge...spend a day with a blindfold covering your eyes. Use what you learn in your writing! Write something using no visual references.
Anyone out there watch the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance"? Last week's episode featured a dance done blind. (see video of the dance here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGZYCp1mQac)
What struck me was the level of absolute trust involved. One can know the steps; but ultimately -- it all comes down to trust. And it reminded me of back when I went a few months without sight. It is true that other senses take over and become very important in how one understands the world around them, how one interprets everyday happenings and how one begins, in a sense, to see beyond sight.
Description, being SO important in writing, too often is used to describe what we see. Yet hearing, feeling, sensing can be used every bit as effectively to describe what is in a scene and are far too often overlooked.
It is one thing to 'see' a busy city street. Now add the rumble of traffic, the vibration of heavy trucks, the cacophony of vibrantly different music, the high-pitched squeal right before a light changes to red, the babble of voices as pedestrians clog sidewalks, the sound of innumerable high heels striking the concrete, and the varied aromas of cooking foods clashing with the cloying mixtures of perfumes underlain by the rotting garbage down the alley.
Transport now to a lake just before sunrise. An owl swoops, its wings making a distinctive sound, the chainsaw buzz of an obnoxious mosquito, the first sounds of robin-song, the last tree-frog chorus. A fish splashes, the ripples it make edge into the dock. Morning rain plops in fat drops sounding hollow on the dried wood of the rickety dock, flat on the dry, dusty path and like machine gun fire resounding off the tin roof of the shed. The creak of an oar moving back and forth in the water as a blue heron calls to his mate. A bullfrog leaps after breakfast slaps into a wet lily pad. The rough panting as your dog joins you after a morning run.
The worlds we create in our writing are not silent. Give the gift of sound to your readers and put them squarely in the midst of the action.
