Do Holidays Belong in Action/Adventure?

Sometimes it seems like action and adventure are full of explosions, fights, wounds, and death. How about holidays?

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I'll admit, mainly, it is because of the food. I love food!

However, whether or not you celebrate Thanksgiving, this is the season of holidays. Most families will celebrate at least one holiday or another, going about with our action-less lives with little trouble, much food, and far too much money spent.

The question I would like to pose to you today is this:

Do holidays belong in action/adventure stories?

My answer is... absolutely!

Holidays are great ways to show sides of your characters that might not otherwise come out in regular settings. Show those family members that the villains have, but want to hide from everyone so they cannot hold them against him. Show the affection that your hero has for a special someone, though the hero does not let him/herself feel it on a regular day.

Goodness, holidays (especially Christmas or Easter) could also make some very colorful explosions. Or furry, depending on if the Easter Bunny is an innocent bystander, or not.

Consider allowing a holiday into your stories. Maybe not so much as so the story is considered a Christmas story, so to speak, but just to break up the action with something calm and heartwarming.
