Letter from the editor

Can fear be lovely?

When editing your action / adventure story, think about what emotions are being played out by the characters. Is it fear? Is it love? I was reading a story the other day and some word choices in the content really bugged me. If you're afraid, feeling true fear, are any of your responses "lovely"? I think not. That kind of adjective doesn't really say much, does it?

You might feel a frisson of fear jitter up your spine, or a rash of goosebumps raise on your arms. Nothing lovely happens. So when you're editing and sprinkling some adjectives here and there, use appropriate ones. And only use a few. I'm guilty of it, I love adjectives, I sprinkle them all over the place and then end up removing most of them because it starts to get downright silly. No one likes their writing to appear silly.

So I suggest choosing some words that best describe what your characters are feeling, or doing, and use them in the best way you can. It's your job to create the feeling in your reader, not tell them how to feel. Use more verbs and nouns in your writing, adjectives can be weak. And don't try to invoke fear with anything 'lovely'. Write on!

Excerpt: Shyla opened the car door with care, to keep from hitting the brush that she managed to avoid when driving the almost non-existent path to her destination. She could have used her gifts to make a path but, just in case someone was out hiking and saw an unnatural phenomenon, she refrained.

Excerpt: My name is Captain Omaris Theramin McDarva. I believe these will be my last words. I do not know who, or what, may find this log. Nor even what year it shall be. I believe the year is 2056, though even of that I am not sure. All I can but do is recount my story in the hopes that someone knows how I lived. And how I died.

Darryl should've done the job himself

Excerpt: Darryl held the red gas can while dodging the alley light bulb. He pressed against the side of the abandoned tenement building. He crept into the recessed door that was boarded up with a partially splintered piece of plywood. Darryl threw a side kick disintegrating the plywood giving him access to the skanky, pitted interior. This seemed to be a perfect place to play.

Excerpt: Orange embers glowed in the ancient fire pit. Pockets of pitch trapped in the green pinewood bows ignited with a rush of sound, sending phantoms of light dancing across the ancient basalt. The warm flares made the dank cliff cave feel somehow cozier than reality imposed.

Soog’Koo’Nak, warrior and hunter of the Oupik tribe, and elder of the Crow clan, sat by the glowing fire, a shaggy cape of glacier bear draped over his broad shoulders. He chewed on a piece of dried seal meat and listened to the wind wail through the valley below.

The sudden arctic storm had raged all day, drifting the morning’s fall of snow hard against the cliff face, sealing the cave entrance. As darkness fell, and the blizzard's fury waned to a dying moan, mournful howls echoed in the distance, wolves on the trail of prey. Tomorrow would be a good day.

Excerpt: Clinton Monroe took a moment to examine his face as he shaved. For a man of forty-five who had been ill-used by the government he had sworn to serve, he could have looked a lot worse. The clear blue eyes that had so steadfastly faced his accuser were dulled with resignation, the court martial and subsequent years in this backwater having taken their toll. His conviction hadn’t been just, of course, but when your accuser was the scion of one of the great noble families of the realm, justice would find little consideration in that particular courtroom.

Excerpt: Silvanna coughed and spluttered as she climbed out of the picture, dripping water all over her antique wooden desk. The other muses, some working hard at their own desks, others chatting, all turned to the back of the room to stare at her. Silvanna flopped down on top of the picture in the puddle of water she had created, just catching her breath for a moment, before dragging herself to the edge of the desk. She sat with her legs dangling over the edge and slumped her shoulders.
