Dreams Come True

For the past 2+ years, I've been working toward a new career, and just last week, I passed my license certification exam! It's been a long journey, but it feels like one of my biggest dreams is coming true!

We all have dreams, whether it's getting a dream job or getting published (which can be both for many of us!), and it can be a long, arduous journey. It can also be extremely rewarding and fun!

Regardless of what your dream is, I think there are some key elements to keeping on track toward your goal:

*Star* No Zero Days - I've written about this before, the concept of No Zero Days. In short, it involves doing at least one thing every day toward your goal. It might be writing a few words, researching publishers, submitting work, entering a contest or even coming up with a plan. Whatever you can find, do one thing today toward your new goal, and keep up that momentum! (Another aspect of No Zero Days is also forgiving yourself if you have an off-day. There's no point in dwelling on the past. Ever onward!)

*Star* Visualize - Use motivational phrases to keep you motivated and place them in high traffic areas (bathroom mirror, fridge, inside your front door, etc.). Do what you can to see your goal regularly to keep yourself motivated.

*Star*Make a Plan - It's important to have a realistic plan. Come up with a schedule of mini-goals. Just having a goal of "Get Published" isn't entirely realistic. It's good to think about all the steps in between (write, edit, peer-reviews, more editing, etc.) Keep a calendar or journal of your plans and goals!

*Star*Reward Yourself Along the Way - Make sure you stop and recognize the steps along the way. Sure, getting published (or whatever your ultimate goal is) is the ultimate reward, but acknowledge the hard work that you've done along the way and give yourself small rewards for your progress!

I think the key to realizing a dream is motivation. It's good to know yourself and know what motivates you. Whatever keeps you going, do that! If something's not working, revise your plan and strategy. Find what works for you! And forgive yourself if you get off track. Don't give up on all your progress if you run into an obstacle or feel a setback!

It's a sad reality that not all dreams come true, but if you work really hard, you can at least be proud of what you've accomplished along the way! Be proud of your strength and determination, and maybe find a new dream! One of my favorite lyrics comes from a song called "Happy Talk" (a show-tune from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific):

If you don't have a dream, how're you going to have a dream come true?
