The Two R's: Review and Respect

Have you ever wondered how to make sure to be respectful when reviewing? Here are a few tips.

Reviewing is delicate business. You are giving your opinion on something that someone else worked very hard on, and oftentimes it is a very fine line between giving them advice they are willing to take, and hurting their feelings. (I have, unfortunately, done both. I never hurt anyone's feelings on purpose, but I have done it inadvertently.)

While we never know how people will react, there are a few things each review should have. I think it increases the respect for the the person's work and feelings, while also pushing reviewers to look at two sides of a situation.

1. Be sure to include the GOOD, too.
It is so easy to focus on the negative, but you should both start and end each review with something that you find to be a positive about the item you are reviewing. Something honest, an insincere compliment won't help.

2. Make all comments constructive.
Criticism and suggestions are inevitable in reviews. Make them constructive, and with a positive tone. And don't pile on too much at once. If someone receives a hugely long review with all kinds of criticism, they are likely to be overwhelmed. If need be, offer what you believe are the most important, and then offer to review again later.

3. If they don't know who you are, give a tiny bit of information about yourself. I don't mean a novel, but I mean introduce yourself. You wouldn't walk up to someone on the street and start having a conversation with them critiquing their work, and not say hello. (At least, I hope not.) So, it is a good idea to go ahead and do this in the review, as well.

I hope these comments have been helpful to you, and I wish you happy reviewing!

Ask & Answer

Here is some of the feedback from "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (January 28, 2015)Open in new Window., my last NN newsletter:

Kay Author Icon said, "Sara, thank you so much for taking the time to put together a newsletter for the community! I had an account on WDC years ago, and had subscribed to three of the site's newsletters, and almost ALWAYS just deleted them because I 'didn't have time' to read them. I got back on WDC with a whole new account, and subscribed to less newsletters in the hopes that I would ACTUALLY read them. I read yours, and I really enjoyed it! You are so right, and your advice is very legit and helpful. Thanks again!"

I am glad I could be helpful!

aegreenfield said, "I'm crafting a fantasy novel. My problem is that I'd originally created a character too much like other characters similar to her in other fantasy works. I'm writing her now to be a tomboy princess.

She grew up in comfort and wealth. She will live in poverty for a while, so I need to create a harsh world which would affect the reader's senses. Thanks for the tips!" in reference to "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.

You are quite welcome! I hope tagging this here might give you some readers who will be able to give you more suggestions, too.

QueenOwl ~ A New Day Dawns Author Icon said, "Great article. It's replete with helpful suggestions make our stories pop and sparkle. One word poke my eye - 'existance' - Was this intentionally misspelled? The existence of quotation marks made me wonder. "

Completely not intentional - just proof that I sometimes forget to check my red squigglie lines. *Smile* Thank you so much for pointing it out! I will be more careful in the future.
