Try Something New!
Here are some activities you may not have noticed yet. Try something new to get involved!
Shhhhh... don't tell anyone.
I've been writing again!
For me, this is hard. It's been quite a while since I've put myself out there. But, these last few weeks I just figured... why not?
So, I started by visiting some of the same old activities I'd always participated in. There was nothing wrong with them, of course, but I just wasn't interested. And that made me a little sad. I wanted to be interested, and I wanted something I could really grasp and roll with, but my old reliables just weren't as reliable this time.
I began trolling around, reading this or that, and finally decided to try something new. This is something I don't ever really do. I stick with what I know, and I go with that. New situations, new judges, new people, new rivalries, new, new, new. But, I decided to do it anyway.
The first one I tried was "CLASH! " [13+], and... I failed. I was quite happy with what I created, but I was beat out by an absolutely excellent competitor. I had nothing to be upset about at all, because it was a very good match.
And so, the second one I tried was "Invalid Item" . It is much more casual, and I am doing quite well, I think. Though, I also think I nearly missed the last one, but I am still going strong.
The last one I decided to jump into head first was "Wdc 15th Birthday Masquerade Party" [13+], which I am also still participating in. I might get nothing out of it in the long run, but I am having a lot of fun so far. My brain is working on the mystery, and I am having a blast with my "costume". It took me a while to get in there, but now it just seems natural.
So, this is what I want you to do. Try something new! We all get set in our ways, comfortable in the "normal", and we don't branch out anymore. No matter how active you are, I want everyone to try something new. I have included some currently running activities and contests that you might enjoy. |
Here are some activities and contests you can try out in your quest for new! Happy participating!

Last newsletter, I wrote about being comfortable when you write, and asked what things other people need to do to properly "prepare" for writing. Here are some of the replies I got. (I am so excited at receiving so many replies!)
Elfin Dragon-finally published said, "You are so right about being comfortable when you write. For the most part I can write anywhere when the mood strikes me, especially if it's a poem. If I don't write those down when I think of them they tend to be lost forever, thus the ever present small notepad. But for serious writing it's best with music (or TV turned down low). And no other distractions, especially IMs , I have to turn those off while writing."
Julie said, "Thank you for sharing your routine! Fuzzy socks are wonderful, I agree."
willwilcox said, "When I write, I like silence. Mornings are best for me because my little pea brain has been writing already while I've slept. I take notes a lot: small pieces of paper I scribble on when a line or an idea hits me. The main thing is to write. Don't put it off, don't make excuses."
GaelicQueen said, "I agree with your article, the writer must find their comfort zone in which to write. I've worked on writing projects in the quiet of a hospital room waiting for a family member to be released, in the middle of a noisy crowd at an outdoor concert, but by far my favorite space is the quiet of my writing place at home. I need silence to better hear the voices in my head. My husband gave soundproof ear muffs (like mowing the yard with) to wear when I want absolute silence, plus it gives him a clue not to interrupt my muse."
hammer18 said, "Right there with you! We all have our rituals. With me it's flavored coffee and incense. I suspect there could be a "Pavlov's dogs" factor at work, but when I taste hazelnut or coconut, and smell a rich sandalwood, I know it's time to quit fooling around, and put words on the screen. Nice job bringing out this almost subconscious activity we use to get started."
This week's question: What new thing would you like to try around the site to get involved? Are you going to host, or enter? Let me know how you found your "new"! |
