Letter from the editor

I wrote something about this last year and the response was that people wished I'd mentioned it earlier. So I am.

In all the hurry and dash and craziness that overcomes folks at this time of year, consider this...perhaps tucked into the toe of a stocking, or into a walnut shell or wrapped up in a pretty little box: write a heartfelt poem to each of those in your family, your kids and/or your circle of friends. Make each individual and person specific. What better gift than that of the specialness of you, than your words?

Sure, it takes time and effort, but the results will be kept and cherished long after the holidays are over. It needn't be super long, but words from your heart about what that person means to you, how you feel about them! That special thing they did that inspired you or that made you so proud of them: words that touch deeply. It can be words of encouragement, or love, words of praise or even a memory re-shared. Perhaps something from your childhood or theirs. Perhaps a challenge for the future.

Maybe you could put into words things you might not say all the time or let someone know how special you think they are or how special they are to you!

Hand write it on something pretty or unique. Use cloth ribbon or cover it in sparkles! Last year, I wrapped some around candy canes, tucked one into a tiny box and had another written on the inside of wrapping paper wrapping a special present. (with a note to open carefully!) Even my stalwart brother got teary-eyed. My hubby has mentioned it a few times since and my daughter has hers tucked away in her jewelry box.

We will have 18 for Christmas this year. So I'm starting now so that I am not rushed and each one is very special! I'm even writing one for the great-grandchild to open a few years down the road. I mentioned handwritten earlier, but it can be printed out in
teensy print if necessary to fit it into something like a walnut shell. ( Do you know the meaning of a walnut shell at Christmas? Along with oranges, they symbolized wealth to those without any but the wealth of family. They were a rare treat in the winter time. Vitamin C and protein!)

Some years, the tag might say 'Open me NOW!' and other years, it will say, 'Open me later.' Either way, it is a very special treat for those you care about!

Ask & Answer

Natechia dos Reis Author IconMail Icon says: I enjoyed reading your newsletter. In my writing classes we were asked to personify emotions, seasons and certain types of people like fallen soldiers. As you said use all your senses to place yourself in their shoes. I loved this exercise. I wrote letters to death, winter and war. I love the challenge of the color poem. I will give it a try. Thanks again for the inspirational and helpful words.
