Spreading Too Thin
For some of us, the holiday season is right on our doorsteps, so I thought I'd write a little bit about managing time. My life has been very busy so perhaps passing on a few tidbits might be helpful.
Decide how much time you can actually devote to 1) the site 2) contests and activities. It's always wonderful to tell all your friends you'd love to help with a contest or activity, but then disappointing them is difficult. We find that even getting ready for the holidays takes a lot of time. Then add parties and the last minute invites and suddenly you find yourself swamped and that great story you were writing for a contest is half done and forgotten in your writing program.
When you log into Writing.com, stick to the most important things first, send your communications, complete your commitments and then surf the site for the fun stuff. There's so much to do for the holidays it can often be overwhelming. Pick and choose the pages you're most interested in and focus on those. There are a lot of contests and getting entries written and edited is time consuming. But it's also a good way to get enough gift points to support your membership.
So...if you have time, have a plan to use it wisely. If you have extra time, please do support the community and help a newbie, donate to a contest or send a few reviews. What better gift to give?

Excerpt: Write a story from a villain's point of view, making a believable case for why he (or she) thinks s/he's actually the hero or good guy/gal of the narrative.
Excerpt: This contest uses only spoken words or internal dialogue!
(Please, none of that he/she said, no "background"-- just dialogue! Hence the name! Write like people speak. Use contractions. Flavor with accents. Branch out. When writing dialogue, anything goes. Throw out all the rules of grammar you've been brainwashed with, write like people talk!)

Excerpt: Mission: As authors, we all dread hearing those three little words 'show not tell'. While it seems to be one of the biggest critiques of story writers (and even poets) it is one of the hardest skills to gain. This contest is geared towards pushing you to practice and hone the skill of showing your reader what the character is feeling, what you really want your reader to feel as they look at your story through the character's eyes.
Excerpt: A new prompt will be posted every day in the forum at the bottom of this page at approximately 11:00 pm WDC time. (Eastern US time). The prompt will have the date of the next day, the day it is due. After the prompt is posted, you'll have about 24 hours to post your entry.

Excerpt: We can retrain our brains to be more positive and less negative with a little practice. Yes, people actually did studies on this and had some pretty awesome results. Now, I'm a super positive person, but I have to recharge all the time because I soak up other people's feelings, especially people who are hurting, depressed, mistreated, ill, abused, etc. So I thought, hey, this sounds like a neat thing to try.
