Medieval Warfare
These two words started an entire week of surfing the internet on my tablet. See, this is what happens when I'm on vacation and have time to fool around on google and research random stuff. I was talking to someone about at trebuchet, no idea how I knew what that was but I did, and then got lost in the rabbit warren of medieval siege machine photos. Try it! I'll check in with you next month when I do this newsletter again.
Not only did I find the aawesome catapult photo of a trebuchet, I found lots of cool and inspiring photos of things such as the mangonel; a traction trebuchet and the onager, a catapult that uses torsional force. Then there was the ballista, which is basically a gigantic crossbow that could fire huge projectiles at fortifications.
Okay...more than once I imagined new and modern uses for these siege engines. Like when the neighbor mows his lawn ridiculously early on a Saturday morning. I could catapult a few dozen donuts at him and surely he'd shut down for some breakfast so I can sleep in. Or you know...use a mangonel to fire a bucket load of broccoli at the ice cream truck as it drives by...just for giggles.
So next time a funny topic comes up in conversation, research it! You'll at least have something off the wall to talk about at your backyard barbecues. And as always, Write On!

Here he grimaced, and looked on further, sighing heavily as sadness seemed to fill his very soul. Years ago he had his flying robot, and had battled evil that came to his country. He had been a hero in which had given him respect as a defender of Earth. He had the thanks of the world for his service for all man-kind. Right up until the last battle with the robot before it had crashed into the sea, shot down by a laser-beam of Gholla, the lizard creature that had attacked Tokyo

A large metal rod with branches like a t.v. antenna stuck out of the ground, hidden before by the bush. He kicked it, listening to the sharp twang it gave.
Excerpt: he Sisters of St. Mary were dedicated to the task of forming good Christian ladies and gentlemen out of us little heathens. A crack on the knuckle with a wooden ruler usually took care of any improper acts or retorts that were forbidden in 1955 Parochial school regulations.
Excerpt: Grootknul pulled himself to his full height and looked across the Woest, balancing himself with the aid of his tail. How often had he done so, peering through the dusty expanse of land that seemed to stretch on forever? The porous, soft-shifting firmament was bright orange in color, contrasting sharply to his grayish, short-cropped furry coat. A silver tint ran down from his face, across his chest, ending just above his empty belly. He knew he stood out, an easy mark for predators, but he had little choice.
Excerpt: Mathias opened the door to the smell of fresh bread and chicken stew. His mouth began watering immediately before he noticed his wife ladling some out for the dog. That dog. What happened to that dog?!?
Excerpt: Julian couldn't believe it, yet, the evidence was right before his eyes. The surveillance photos, the newspaper articles that were strewn across the walls of the small secluded room were all proof of Walter's obsession and true identity.
Excerpt: “We can just go to the pound, buy some cats—”
“Hush, now. Nonsense. You know better than that. Paying for natural ingredients nullifies the spell. There can be no currencies attached in anyway.”
“Mom, I don’t want to kill Miss Popples.”
Excerpt: The task is simple: get inspired by the photograph above and write a short story using this inspiration!
Excerpt: Now taking sign-ups for the 2016 round of this three months long contest. Winners receive the exclusive Season of Writing merit badge. There is a 10,000 gift points sign up fee. The contest needs 15 participants minimum to run.

Last month's question: Have you found a topic that piqued your curiosity on WDC?
How did that influence your writing?
Quick-Quill responded: It wasn't a topic it was something someone wrote that bugged me so bad I had to write my own story about it. Then I sent it out to a publisher and it was accepted. |
