About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

What happens when two people fall in love, yet their families disapprove? Why do they disapprove? There are many differences - one is poor, one is rich. There may be a history of fighting such as "Romeo or Juliet," or maybe one of the lovers comes from the wrong side of the tracks (considered poor or dangerous) Perhaps one is just from a different track entirely like Sandy was in Grease. Does it matter if your family or friends disapprove? Whatever the disapproval, can love overcome in the end?

Letter from the editor

What is it about disapproval that makes love that much more poignant? Both Romeo and Juliet came from affluent families. In West Side Story, Tony and Maria came from different gangs. In Grease, Sandy was just as smart as the pink ladies, even smarter maybe, yet they gave her a hard time because she was different.

Families worry about "gold diggers." Friends fear the new person won't fit in. In fact, both family and friends tend to look for ulterior motives in regards to their loved ones' love interest. Why would "this different person" fall in love with their "sweet" angel?

Disapproval causes conflict, and conflict, in turn, fuels the intensity of love.

Differences can be very challenging, but maybe that's what we're seeking. We can be drawn to very different people who answer our unfilled desires. The heightened emotions satisfy the unfilled need for connection, emotional need, love, security, and comfort. And yet, due to the social climate around us, our friends and families disapprove. What's a boy or girl to do when love propels them in one direction and the people we've grown up with all our lives want us to go down a different path? Example: Juliet's father in "Romeo and Juliet" wanted to marry her off to a man of his choosing, a "safe" choice." Should we follow our hearts and do the "wrong" thing in the eyes of our loved ones, or should we follow our head and just be miserable without the one we love?

Disapproval makes for an intriguing romantic tale simply because it heightens the conflict and makes it that much "sweeter."

My favorite sub-genre is Historical. I would like to see more Vintage set, which I also consider Historical rather than a separate category. Favorite romance novel? Far too many but if I have to pick, Morning Glory by Lavyrle Spencer. Past time to re-read it, I believe*Smile* Vada

Thanks so much for sharing. Vintage has a lot of appeal. In fact, one of my vintage romances, "Journey of the Heart," is my best seller. There's something about the war years that readers find appealing.

"What makes this story so captivating is the combination of excellent character depictions, creative twists and turns of the plot, and the challenges and incidents thrown in the protagonist's way."
