Unusual Lead

How far can you veer from the norm and still have a compelling action adventure?

Some action/adventure stories happen in unlikely circumstances.

The typical action adventure plays off of a hero who is thrust into a situation that he or she has to master. This does not necessarily mean the hero is reactive, as the situation could be brought on by them. The way the story progresses from the inciting incident, however, will follow a somewhat predictable path along the plot based on the hero's archetype.

As a writer, you can break out from the typical plot narration by coming up with a lead character that shakes that up. Examples could be animals, children, groups of people who have to work together, and even anthropomorphic characters.

The same plot should play out very different whether you use an adult human (man or woman) to go through the story versus a dog, a bird, or a coin.

On the flip-side, you can use the ideas that you have when you picture your plot being handled by an a-typical hero to enhance an action adventure story that you write that has a typical lead character. Thinking outside the box of typical archetypes will create story ideas that will make your audience gasp and feel surprised and entertained.

Think "Mission Impossible" but instead of Ethan Hunt being a male, you have him be a pebble or a young child.
