Action Becomes You

It would seem lately my life is filled with non-stop action and adventure. Having just returned from several days in New Orleans followed by a seven-day cruise to Key West and the Bahamas, my wife and I decided to take in the latest Vin Diesel movie, The Fate of the Furious. And mixed in between the cruise and movie was my grandson’s soccer game.

In other words, my life has no shortage of action. I suspect life is much the same for you. Or, maybe not, you say. ‘My life is boring.’
My response is how do you define action and adventure?

If your answer is more along the lines of the Fast and Furious franchise, then yes, you might consider your life somewhat boring. But, embrace the interplay among 22 twelve- and thirteen-year-old boys and girls on a soccer field for an hour. Action abounds. You can find action in most aspects of your life.

Every idea you have is shaped by the very person you are. Your experiences, your schooling, your observations, your interaction with others, even your dreams at night have an impact on that idea that appears as a spark in your brain. Few ideas come to you fully formed and ready to BE.

You must nurture, cajole, egg on, and otherwise massage that kernel until you have something on which to hold and pour forth on paper. That’s the key—don’t let it mature in your mind. Get it down on paper lest you lose it.

The very act of birthing an idea for a story is action. Writing is an active process. Look around you. And start putting those story ideas on paper. We’re waiting for you.
