What Makes Us Laugh?

For everyone the answer to this question is very different. I am not a person with a good sense of humour. I find very few things funny, but not everyone is like me. I loved the Hitchhiker of the Galaxy series. Others found it stupid.
We want lose ourselves in what we read, and comedy is no exception. We love to immerse ourselves in the jokes and absurd happenings of the characters. Therefore, there are few things we must do to keep our reader engaged.

Create Believable Characters

Writers are inclined to create characters that are exaggerated when they write comedy. It works in television comedy, after all. In literature strong, likeable and realistic characters keep us in the story. The exaggerated buffoon, or nosy neighbour might not work.

Make Your Jokes In Good Taste

Comedy tends to deal with societal issues in a funny way. There are things that fall flat because they hit to close to touchy subjects and end up being in bad taste. You reader will end up with an eye roll as opposed to a hearty belly laugh. Today, for example, jokes about minorities might not go down very well for a good many people.

Give Your Story Depth

Comedy does not have to one dimensional. Give your characters facets. Give you settings a recognizable quality and make your reader feel like they might be reading about home. Depth and realism will only add to the fun not take away from it.

Let's not forget everything we know about writing just because we are writing comedy. Our reader is still the most important person to us. Remember that and keep them reading your story.
