Variables

I recently learned to make poached eggs, and what I've learned from that is there are many variables that go into cooking them successfully. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, and often (from reading other experiences of learning to make them) you think you've done everything right and you still can mess it up. *Pthb*

What does this have to do with Contests & Activities?

Well, it got me thinking about my own writing or hosting of contests. Often, I think I've done everything "right," and still, I don't win or place in the top choices of a contest. Or I don't get a lot of response to a contest or activity I'm hosting.

Writing can be like cooking, I think. There are a lot of variables that go into it, and if one of those is slightly off, it can throw off the whole thing. (On the opposite side of that, sometimes you think you've done everything wrong, and it still works somehow! *Laugh*)

Some tips for success:

*Bullet* Proofread. It can be critically important, and often difficult, for a writer to go over what they've written. Print it out and read it. Read it out loud. Ask a friend to read it.

*Bullet* Ask for help. If you can, get a friend or another writer to read and give their opinion. And then take their opinion/criticism seriously. If you disagree, analyze why.

*Bullet* Stay positive. Never stop writing! Writing (and cooking) is a skill that can take time to get right. Developing a skill and getting good at something takes time and practice. Stay positive and keep on trying!

*Bullet* Contest hosts: Don't give up! Sometimes it takes time for people to find your contest or activity. Sometimes it's just not the right time, but don't give up!

As always, keep on writing!
