Letter from the editor

“I've begun to realize that you can listen to silence and learn from it. It has a quality and a dimension all its own.”
― Chaim Potok, The Chosen

September here at Writing.com is an extremely busy month. There are a lot of activities happening due to the birthday celebration each year. Sometimes it's hard to bounce back after overindulgence. Just like when you accept that last slice of cake even though you're full from dinner, writing and creating more than you normally do, can leave you with a feeling of overindulgence. You feel wasted, tired, and have no urge to write anything.

So what should you do?

It's okay to take a break, everyone does it at some point. The important thing is, don't take too long. The habit of writing is not one you should break. While writing too much in a short time can be exhausting, stopping all together can have its effects as well. You can begin to feel overwhelmed and indecisive for starters. So after a short break to refresh your brain, get right back to it and make your goal to write every day. It may sound like a lot but I didn't say write all day, just every day. It can be just fifteen minutes, that's just fine. Take your time to write a blog or journal if you don't feel like being creative or restricted in your endeavors. Rules are not the goal, the true goal is just to keep (or develop) the habit. The most prominent and prolific writers in the world will tell you - develop a writing habit. It's the most important key to improving your writing.

Easier said than done, right?

I'm a procrastinator, so I totally understand when someone says. I just don't have time for writing. I've said it many times myself. However, the truth is, we all do. We have time for writing, we have time for exercise, and we have time for that phone call to mom or aunt Sophy or whatever else you're putting off. It's just a matter of prioritizing and getting things done.

Reacting is the opposite of creating. Are you creating your future or just reacting to the past?

Toilet Breaks in Motor Racing - New Rule Open in new Window. [18+]
A new rule will enforce toilet breaks in motor racing. Cars, motorbikes, and strategy.
by RFSMITH Author Icon

Excerpt:
There is news, that motor racing is to bring in toilet breaks.
Yes that is true, motorbikers, rally drivers, and motor car racers will not be able to do the toilet in the car, or on the motorbike.
The motor sports companies feel motor racing should be realistic, reflecting the driving conditions ordinary people have to do. And we can’t do the toilet in the car, when we are on a long drive. People would complain. After all, imagine driving one handed, what a mess.

Coffee Grounds Open in new Window. [E]
A man comes to terms with his marriage ending.
by thistennesseeguy Author Icon

Excerpt:
He always added an extra scoop of the dark coffee grounds to the pot he was making in the morning. It was something she hated, but he never understood why, since she always added so much sugar that it tasted like hot Kool-Aide instead of the wake-me-up comfort that he found in it. He used to buy it from a can, but had found that buying the beans and grinding them up, made for a better cup. The aroma that was given off when the hot water started seeping into the filter always reminded him of his father.

by Wynter Author Icon

Excerpt:
The engine turns idly as I wait in the car. My gaze fixated on the hotel. When Joe suggested we visit the Yorkshire’s national park to celebrate our third anniversary, I hadn’t given it much thought. Why would I when the idea of a romantic weekend away left me all excited. Recently our relationship has become stagnant, and I had begun to believe Joe was looking for a way out. I had been dreading the moment, he would tell me it was over. A moment which never happened.

F is for Forest Open in new Window. [13+]
A drafted story about a man who's missing in a forest, the narrator goes looking for him.
by Eleanor Lulamay Marriott Author Icon

Excerpt:
Frankly, forests always frightened me, as a child. The falling leaves that whispered like footsteps on the floor would serve only to unnerve and fill my soul with foreboding.

Travelling there at night - no light - I once found myself, and though I could not tell you just what I thought I was doing there, I can tell you that it wasn't the lack of sight that gave me such fright....

...but the constant sensation that something just wasn't quite right.

I received some wonderful feedback to my last newsletter [#8473] "Birthday TraditionsOpen in new Window. and I'm proud to share it with you.

From L.A. Grawitch Author Icon
I guess that I need help figuring out the bitem format. I entered a contest and can't figure out where to put the [bitem:] or how to link it. Any ideas would help. I have an old computer, which makes it even more interesting. Thank you.

Hi there!

The best advice I can offer is when you are on the site and have a question on how to do something, look up in the right-hand top corner for "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.. This will answer many of your questions quickly. Most times that you have to enter a contest by placing a link, the item is a forum. The post "Using Message ForumsOpen in new Window. will tell you how to navigate and post in a forum. As far as creating a BITEM link to an item in your portfolio. Your best and easiest tool would be to look to the left in the column with all the areas such as "Community" and "Authors". Look for the one that is listed as "Writing.com Tools" and click it. Another list with pop out to the right. Near the top you will see "Writing ML: Docs and Help". Click that and another pop-out box will appear with all sorts of WritingML commands to use on this site. Under the second subheading you will see "Create Links". That is the area you need. You simply choose what type of link you are trying to create based on the item type. You'd most likely want to concentrate on "Link to Item". There are many ways to link an item here depending on what information you need to include. The most common of those links is the "BITEM" as you mentioned. I hope this helps! Thank you for writing in to us.
