Letter from the editor

Horror does not have to be ugly. In fact, many frightening creatures of real life and legend are quite beautiful. Here are a few examples:

Bright colors and patterns in nature are often a warning that the animal or plant is poisonous, venomous, or dangerous in some other way. The vivid colors and patterns of the poison dart frog or coral snake mean, "Stay away from me. I will hurt you."

Many plants with beautiful flowers contain toxins that can lead to illness or death if eaten. Examples include oleander and poinsettia.

Many evil characters of fairy tales and legends are beautiful. The Wicked Queen of "Snow White" and Maleficent of "Sleeping Beauty" are examples.

Beautiful horror creatures of legend often use their beauty as a trap to entice their victims closer. Sirens are said to be beautiful women whose lovely singing voices lure sailors to their death upon the rocks.

While vampires in some stories are said to be ugly, in others, both male and female vampires are quite attractive. Since a vampire must be invited in to a victim's home, physical beauty is a definite advantage.

A shapeshifter or trickster might assume the form of a beautiful or harmless person in order to gain their victim's trust.

Beautiful horror creatures are dangerous because we are drawn to them. We don't expect beautiful things to be evil or dangerous and want to get closer to them. Maybe your character might flee in terror from an ugly creature that is actually harmless, only to run straight into the jaws of a beautiful, but evil monster. *Shock*

Something to try: Write a horror story with a beautiful villain or monster.
