Letter from the editor

Happy Holidays, everyone! I hope that you are having a good time.

As I write, mine’s quite good apart from a broken boiler, so the house is quite cold what with the freezing temperatures outside. It is, of course, not the best time of the year for something like that to happen as nobody is available to fix it. Such is life.

Last night, I was thinking about the year ahead. I’m not one for making New Year’s resolutions. I know that it can be helpful to make them – the New Year can feel like a fresh start – but I always figure that it’s too easy to break them, which then leads to feelings of guilt and disappointment and for what? We all have things that we need to do, I’m sure, from losing weight to finally tackling those DIY projects, but it’s probably not the end of the world if we don’t start doing so on the 1st of January.

That said, I do have plans for next year. Many don’t have set deadlines, but if all goes well it will be a year of change for me. Whether or not I succeed is not entirely in my hands. There are often outside factors that affect our lives. In my case, a big factor is the UK’s planned exit from the European Union. As an EU migrant, there is still the risk that whilst I moved here legally quite a few years ago, I could end up having my right to remain here removed. Nothing appears to be set in stone even this close to the day of exit, in March. If I were to have to leave, it would mess up my life significantly as, well, this is my home.

Assuming that I will be permitted to stay, however, I am planning on achieving my Master’s degree in Philosophy next year. Then, I hope to go straight into a second undergraduate degree, this time in Social Psychology.

I’m planning on getting back into publishing articles in various publications and I’ve just spotted an opportunity for a freelance contract which would be a nice start.

I am planning on getting healthier and, yes, losing some weight, but I probably won’t start on the 1st of January. My plan for that day very much involves lazing around.

I’m planning on doing more work in the woods next year – there’s a community project focussed on nature and wildlife in this area. That nicely ties in with working on my health and fitness. I also want to do training with an organisation that’ll enable me to work with bats – we apparently have three different species in this area.

Those who read my newsletters here know that I’m all over the place with my faith and I would like to gain more clarity the coming year.

And, I hope to get married! *Delight* No date has been set yet what with the above-mentioned political mess, and I’ll need to get some papers officially translated before we can register, but it’s being planned and that’ll be something major for 2019.

If everything falls into place, then, I’ll be a healthy married graduate by this time next year, and that would be a very positive outcome. What about you? What are your plans?
