About This Newsletter

No quotes -- just a thought ... as writers, we play with thoughts, giving them the words needed, framing them in fresh perspectives. Wordsmiths forging onward!

Letter from the editor

One of the writing prompts we regularly throw at the contestants of the 'Custruct Cup' is to write a poem of some length WITHOUT using any of the following words.
Prepositions

to
of
in
for
on
with
at
by
from
up
about
into
over
after

or these words:

the
and
a
that

not
he
as
you
this
but
his
they
her
she
or
an
will
my
one
all
would
there
their
they're

Why NOT use them? In writing, but especially in poetry, they are clutter or filler words. NOT using them forces the writer to be creative in their phrasings so that the idea, the concept is the focus --as it should be.

Another thing we do is have our poets write about 250 words about what their poem is about and then have them distill it down to the essence, the central thoughts, the core and rebuild the idea from there, again without using the too oft used 'invisible' words that creep into our writing and we don't even see them! Reading poems aloud really helps bring to the fore just how often these words are used.
