How many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop? I mean, how many drafts do you need to write to get to the finished product when it comes to writing romance?
This is a little bit of a jest because much like the tootsie roll lollipop joke there isn't an exact answer. It's not like there is a particular measure or set limit to how many you can do. Unlike devices like nasal sprays or inhalers that sometimes claim on the box there are supposedly 200 uses before the end (even measured items can vary based on personal usage). Whether it's writing a poem, a short story or even an essay, there is no right answer but the question is still something we can consider as we develop our writing process and the items we create.
So, how many drafts might it take to finish a story? Consider a few things when getting into the rewrite and revision stages. First, what kind of item are you writing? Even poetry should get a little bit of revision or rewrite though that might not always be the process for some. Still, the type of item is going to influence how many times along the the types of revisions required. A poem is probably going to be different than a short story. A novelette versus a novel can also have different requirements in order to create a somewhat finalizes product. For me, my novels themselves can vary depending on how the first draft goes and how long I've been writing as to how much revision is necessary. Not every story is the same and thus it might not need the same number of drafts.
Thus, second to consider is the actual writing. The individual story or poem will have an influence on how many drafts are needed or at the very least, the extent of changes and fixes that need to be made. Have you share the story with anyone? What has been the feedback? You don't have to take every comment and suggestion to heart and change it how they suggest but at least consider not only the ideas but what might be lurking behind the comments as to what might make the item even better.
Does it need a rewrite or an edit? Not everyone views them as the same thing. For me, a rewrite is a much longer endeavor that requires more significant changes. Sure, in edits whole sentences and paragraphs can be changed but with rewrites there is the change of characters and storylines being developed into different results. Both make my stories longer, even the romances but that's just my process. Many will find editing includes cutting out words and elements that don't help the story and thus the item might get shorter. Either way, you have to find the process that works both for you and the item you are creating.
Romance is like any other genre but at the same time can stand alone in what it takes in order to create a cohesive, enjoyable finished product. What you do will depend on such a variety of things that we can't pinpoint and tell you exactly what method will work. There isn't a new school formula where you add 1 first draft with 3 rewrites divided by 2 edits along with the square root of reader feedback in order to get the right answer. It's all about writing, rewriting, a little bit of editing and doing what feels right for your particular item. Even at times, you might just do the one draft and be done. It all varies.
