Letter from the editor

What makes a place scary? If you ask different people this question, you will probably get many different answers. One person's nightmare might be another's paradise.

Horror stories and movies take advantage of many human fears that are rooted in our survival instinct. For example, avoiding dark, isolated places where strange noises could be heard probably saved the lives of our primitive ancestors.

We tend to fear what we do not know. A resident of a small country village might fear large cities, while a person living in the city might dread the thought of a visit to the country. Our fear of the unknown may keep us alive and safe in some cases, but in others it may keep us from trying new things. In an extreme form, fear of the unknown can be paralyzing. The person might be unable to leave their house and will shun all contact with the outside world. In cases like that, the scariest place is the human mind.

Some places might only be frightening to a few people because of personal experience. If a character has bad memories of a certain place, it might be terrifying to them, even if it seems harmless to others.

Maybe it is not the place itself that is frightening, but rather the people or other creatures who are found there. The island where "Jurassic Park" took place was beautiful, but soon there was screaming and running...*Smile*

What is the scariest place you have ever been, and why? One of the scariest places I have ever been was high school!

Something to try: Write a horror story set in the scariest place you have ever been.
