What happened after WWII in Detroit |
DETROIT In the summer of 1945, The year that I was born. The August sun was shining bright, Farmers grew soy beans, and corn. But in the city of Detroit, A sweltering heat beat down. Upon the factory workers, In this big industrial town. The women worked in factories, They were building all the planes. To help out our great nation, Though suffering aches and pains. Rosie-the-Riveter was the name, given to all the ladies. That filled the sweltering factories, that were as hot as Hades. Soon the war was ending, After bombs fell on Japan. Happiness, joy and laughter, In the hearts of every man. Soldiers would be coming home, To family, friends and lovers. Wives would finally get their men, Underneath their covers. A baby boom the following year, Left many new mouths to feed. But jobs were scarce after the war, There were many in great need. Detroit soon switched their assembly line, From making bombs and planes. To making trucks, and automobiles, And shipping them on trains. New jobs were soon developed, The auto industry grew. Now Detroit's the center of the industry, Making cars for me and you. |
