A surprising corner of Westminster Abbey
A Haven of Stillness

Like a cloud, silence envelops me,
As I kneel before God.
In this small chapel there is peace
In the stillness

Before me, the painting of a long forgotten saint
Who served the same God.
The painting is faint on the wall, forgotten by men,
But not by God.

The silence adds to my awe as I kneel.
This place is a refuge,
A haven in the midst of business and noise.
Noise, it seems, cannot enter.

Yet beyond those walls and the heavy wooden doors
Are the voices of thousands.
Tourists who have come to visit the graves of monarchs,
Not to meet God.

Outside these walls many come, not to worship God,
But only the power and talent of men.
It is the graves of the famous that are viewed with awe.
Has God been driven from his house?

But no, he is here in the stillness of this chapel.
Here for all who seek him.
Few know of this quiet place where tourists cannot come.
Yet it is available to all who seek,
To all who pray,
To all who listen,
In the silence.
In the presence of the living God.

So there I kneel, in quiet reverence,
And feel God’s presence surround me as does the silence.
He is here. I can feel it.
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
