Could a simple dream save a girls life?
|
Jeff felt like he was floating, he could see but could not be seen. There was a small river; he recognized it right away as the North Nottawasaga River. His father had often taken him fishing down that very river, until his Dad got the new job and no longer seemed to have any time for Jeff. He flew down lower and saw a small cottage down below. There was a young girl, about 4 years old playing by the waters’ edge. It had just started to snow but Jeff could still see her clearly. She was edging slowly towards the water. He gasped as he saw the girl try and walk across the ice that had frozen over the river. She instantly broke through it, and Jeff knew unless someone helped her, and fast, she wouldn’t make it. Jeff fell from the sky and landed in the icy river. He saw the girl sinking slowly, he tried desperately to swim over to her but he found he couldn’t move. That was when Jeff woke up. He had forgotten he was on the top bunk and he hit his head hard on the ceiling. He cried out in pain – that woke his younger brother who began to cry. Jeff’s mom heard her son crying and ran into their room to see what was going on. Jeff just left the room without saying anything. He couldn’t shake the feeling that his dream was some how a prediction of the near future. He got dressed and went into the family room to watch the weather report. He also checked the time. It was 5:30 am. The weatherman said there would be slight flurries in the afternoon. Jeff flicked off the TV and paced back and forth. He knew his dream was going to come true. And even if it wasn’t, well he just couldn’t take that chance. He had no ride to get to the river and he knew would have to leave now if he wanted to make it there by the afternoon. He put on his coat and started making his way to the river. Jeff made it there at about one o’clock. He had no way of knowing when the girl would be there so he just continued walking down the river until he reached the cottage, he wasn't sure if it was the right one but it seemed familiar. Then he saw it; just up ahead he saw the little girl fall through the ice. He raced over to her; everything was just like he had dreamt. He jumped into the water without hesitating. Instantly he began to lose feeling in his fingers and toes. He wrapped his arms around the girl and pulled her to safety. The father of the girl came running out of the house. He brought both Jeff and the girl inside. He called the ambulance and they were both rushed to the hospital. As Jeff lay in the hospital bed, a girl about his age whom he had never met before came in and sat on the edge of his bed. She kissed him on the cheek, “I knew you would save her, that’s why I gave you that dream. There will be others.” She got up to leave. “Wait” Jeff sat up, “Who are you?” But she just smiled, turned away and left. *My orignal idea was to continue it with another dream but more complicated, as in he couldn't find the solution immediately and it wouldn't happen right away either. But I decided to leave it as is. Tell me what you think and if you like it short or if it should be continued!!* |
