I wrote this poem after the attack at Virginia Tech. |
Another September it was described, But through the terror seen in those young eyes Somehow it made this event hit closer to home. And the running The Screaming The Gunshots The Bleeding Many of these people didn’t have a chance. By the time the police had arrived Many people’s early lives Were gone. He was a crazy kid some would say, He let nothing stand in his way To complete what he had set out to do. So he entered with guns blazing Many grazing, the warm bodies And at first only hitting a few. From there the media took hold Of what they realized would be this year’s gold Of a story, not recognizing the true horror that ensued. And with cameras rolling, And lights glowing, We heard about the issue But Nothing could stop the brutality And as the news made its generalities I couldn’t think of anything to do but cry. And although it seemed selfish For I wasn’t there, not even a witness, I couldn’t stop the tears streaming from my eyes. But two days after I know that it’s fine, For the good friends of the good friends of mine Are in a better place that my faith allows me To believe in as heaven. And it’s over, so you say But day after day, after day, after day The country cannot forget No. Will not forget April 16, 2007. |
