a short childrens story about two little dogs
The Adventures of
Heather and Hanna
The Beautiful Thing

Heather and Hanna are two little puppies that live with a big dog named Bandit. They also live with a fat cat named Chuck. Bandit and Chuck are both very old and wise animals. They all lived in a huge house with a beautiful large fenced yard. One day Heather was playing in her yard. She was running around and rolling in the grass and just enjoying the beautiful day. When all of a sudden she saw something…she began to walk over to it, but then she became a little bit scared. The thing was beautiful and it had such lovely wings. She thought “What if that thing is bad? What if it tries to bite me?” She decided to call for Hanna.
“Hanna! Oh, Hanna! Come here quick. There is something over there and I am afraid it might bite me.”
Hanna ran over to her sister as fast as she could. Hanna also saw the thing and but she was not afraid. But she wondered what it was.
“Heather, that thing is so lovely. I don’t think it will bite you, but I do not know what it is either.”
“Let’s go get Bandit and ask him what it is,” Hanna said.
They both ran to get Bandit, but he was no where to be found. They did run into Chuck the cat.
Hanna and Heather both said to him, “Chuck, come quick and see what we have found. It is beautiful and it has wings, but we do not know what it is.”
Chuck wasn’t sure he wanted to get up from his lovely nap, but he could see how excited the two little puppies were. He stood up and stretched himself out.
“Ok, girls lets go see what you have found.”
The puppies walked behind Chuck, but he walked very slowly. They tried to get him to hurry, but he would not go faster because he was still sleepy from his nap. Finally, they got to the place where the thing was.
Heather said “, See that thing there, it is moving and it is very pretty. Will it bite us? What is it?”
Hanna looked at Chuck; she thought he might be scared of the thing, too. But he was just smiling.
Hanna said," Do you think it can fly, because look…it has wings!”
Chuck said to the small dogs," No, it won’t bite you. Yes, that thing can fly. It also lays very little eggs that turn into something called a larva. The larvas are also known as a caterpillar. The larvas eat, and eat and soon they make a little house called a cocoon. It stays inside that cocoon until it is ready to come out. It doesn’t eat a thing the whole time it is in the cocoon.”
The little dogs waited patiently while Chuck continued. “Soon the worm inside grows very big. In fact, it grows too big for the cocoon. So the cocoon pops open and then the most amazing thing has happened. The thing you see before you is what comes out.”
The girls were so excited,” Okay, but WHAT is it?” They both asked at the same time.
“That beautiful thing you see before you is…a BUTTERFLY!”
The little dogs were so happy to know what the beautiful thing was called. They wanted to give it a name, but they could not because…As they got closer to it, IT FLEW AWAY.
But the little dogs were happy to have learned about the beautiful butterfly and they would watch for another one to come into their yard. And maybe, just maybe, they would be able to name the next one.
