As the years go by and I grow more weak,
it is the ending of life for which I now seek.
My step is slower, I crave the silent rest,
I have become a burden to those loved best.
Life for me is no longer worth the living,
I'm tired of trying, of working, of giving.
I really thought that when I was older
I'd be able to handle it like a soldier.
There is so much turbulence in my life
and you cannot imagine the pain and strife.
The ones I raised with care and pride
now tend to turn away, and will not abide
an old woman's remarks, not meant to pry,
they look at me now with a jaundiced eye.
Part of me wants to shout so they will hear
that I'm still alive, let me make that clear!
And then there is a part of me that quietly
gives in to their wishes, just let me be -
The night grows dark, yet I see the light
that will lead me away, I shall die tonight.
As the years go by and I grow more weak,
it is the ending of life for which I now seek.
My step is slower, I crave the silent rest,
I have become a burden to those loved best.
