A snowbound man gets desperate for food. (Flash Fiction) |
Old Blue the Coonhound and Jake, the dog’s owner, eyed each other suspiciously; their thoughts were amazingly similar. Each wondered how much longer he could go without resorting to eating the other. Jake took a second bite from the sofa cushion, chewing slowly in the hopes of convincing his stomach that something good was in the works. After five days of being snowed in, conditions had really bottomed out. With electricity and gas being cut off, the small hunting cabin had eventually conformed to the surrounding environmental temperatures, currently residing somewhere south of freezing. Everything edible had been eaten by the end of the second day. Thirst was becoming an issue as even the beer had frozen solid. This has to be the worse hunting vacation ever, Jake thought. Sure, he had got his deer but that really didn’t help. The deer was currently a frozen block tied to the Jeep which was parked about thirty snow-drifted feet from the front door of the cabin. Also located in the Jeep were roughly a billion water-proof matches, matches that would have been useful in burning some of the less-edible furniture for heat. Jake got up and walked around the room to keep warm. Old Blue, who had been attempting to sleep with one eye open, lifted his head and tried to growl. Apparently, his voice box had frozen. He just coughed up a piece of the shoe he had eaten earlier. With a tear in his eye, Jake approached Old Blue and lifted him up. He carried him into the kitchen and set him on the table. He then opened up the cupboard which was filled with cans of SPAM. “Sorry boy, looks like we have to eat this to survive. You finished off my last shoe this morning.” Word count 299 |
