My oldest son graduates this year. This is a childhood memory that I treasure.
Like a Chicken on a June Bug

Red, blue and yellow back pack
Paper and pencils in a sack
Brand new tennis shoes so cool
Off we go for the first day of school

Big brown eyes and a big smile
Always busy mile after mile
First grade came so fast
Now it is only memories past

One of my favorite memories you made
Happened in the First grade
One day after school as you played
A curious question to me you made

“Momma, what does a chicken do to a June bug?”
Is what you said, as you lightly scratched your head?
Why do ask such a question, my son?
This is how the story begun

Today at school I couldn’t sit in my seat
“Luke” Mrs. Cotham said, as I stood on my feet
“I’m going to be on you like a Chicken on a June bug,”
If you don’t sit in your seat!

So Momma, I really need to know
Before back to school I go
If I need to leave my seat
What will happen while I am on my feet?

My sweet son don’t worry or fret
Just be sure in your seat you set
So you will never have to retreat
Like a June bug when a Chicken it meets!

As the years pass, the things you’ve learned
From this special teacher you will never spurn
One day, when in their seat your child won’t stay
Thanks to Mrs. Cotham you will know what to say!
