A little boy’s birthday is special indeed
I ponder perplexed, what does he need?
Toys and games of endless design
choosing the right one taxes my mind.
Race cars that speed, fire trucks that roar
backhoes that dig, airplanes that soar.
What will I pick to earn that big wow
from my little grandson so tiny now?
I bake a cake, chocolate and sweet,
he spreads the frosting not very neat.
It’s lumpy and leaning, candles are found
stuck in and lit, they help it look round.
He makes a wish and sucks in some air,
blows out the candles with more breath to spare.
The cake is scrumptious which just goes to show
you can’t judge a book by its cover you know
Gift paper rips amid squeals of delight.
My kitchen is trashed but my choice turned out right.
A birthday is celebrated and each one is dear,
but thank God they come only once every year.
