The experience of Jean Philippe in Jacmel
Behind the mountains there are more mountains
After a few days at the house of the farmer of Leoganes, Jean Philippe left for the city of jacmel in the evening. It was a long trip by horse. Through the rocky, dark, and wet road stretched an endless procession of people. All were dressed in red. They crossed in front of the horse that was going slowly and was stopping from time to time. Without a good understanding of what was going on, jean Philippe continued the complicated trip. But the crowd of adults, teens, and even children and animals, began to annoy him. Upon arriving at a four lane road he saw a man that was playing a flute. The man had a wasp nest under his chin. Another man was coming down the road. He was extremely tall. He had a leg on one side of the road and the other leg on the other side. Jean Philippe went under his legs. At that moment, he realized that they were doing witchcrafts. He got scared and started screaming: “deye mon gen mon” (behind the mountains there are more mountains).
Under the moonless sky and the road full of puddles, Jean Philippe rode all night. By dawn he was still halfway. The farmers began to pass by. Some had hoe on their back and others carried machetes. They greeted jean Philippe with a polite good day. While some farmers harvested on a hill a rooster crowed at dawn. Jean Philippe watched the cassava, plantains and corn field along the road, and began to praise life in the countryside.
It was sunrise. Jean Philippe was very exhausted. He got off and tied the horse to a tree. He lied down on a few dry leaves that were around trying to get some rest. He fell asleep and had many nightmares. When he woke up, he untied the horse that cleaned all of the grass that was there. He mounted his horse and galloped to the city of jacmel.
It was four o’clock when he arrived. The people of jacmel were marching that day. The protesters came from all over. They mobilized to make this historic event. They came out with their banners. They claimed that the general step down from power. When they saw jean Philippe, there was a standing ovation. Jean Philippe took over the event with these slogans: “no peace without justice” “no justice without democracy” “democracy or death”.
He had a special talent to lead demonstrations. That afternoon, he shook the streets of jacmel, where the protesters stayed up very late. Jean Philippe spent a week in the city criticizing the military government. He returned to Port au Prince on March 23, when the dictator fled the country.
