Oscars for All!

It takes but little to be an actor
Even though it may seem an art for few
In fact it is as common as water

See how the sycophant fakes his laughter
And how the sobber conjures tears untrue
It takes but little to be an actor

From birth we learn to play the creator
Of tall tales and feigned feelings. Nothing new,
Like swimming to babes thrown into water

Our skills well honed, become ever better
With perfect pretense, many truths we skew
Plays and speech twisted at every letter

We may think us straight, and not an actor
But how many dramas we need to brew
To squeeze from life few more drops of nectar


Written (delayed) for Week 4 of "Defining Poetry: Contest" . Chosen poetic inspiration was Elizabeth Bishop's "One Art"

* Which particular line really resonated with you?
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Witty line and seems so true!

* How did the poet's style influence your own?
The poem talks about something mundane, which is an approach I love. I have done the same thing in my previous poems such as "The Yawn"  and "Aah … Aah … AAACHOOO!" .

I also liked the form used, quite suitable for a humorous piece.

* What is the connection between the poet's poem and your own?
Elizabeth took a funny look at something very common in people's lives. I've done the same, but talked about something which might not be so apparent as first thought.
