Poem about flowers that grow in the dessert just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. |
FLOWERS IN DESSERT TIME Doorway to things of flowering beauty, unexpected, foreign, of barren land, this dessert place- Embracing tender life that belongs not, in such hostile ground, so arid, sandy, dusty- Secure in the knowledge of ages gone by, that shown upon this dessert, such beauty, and will again, has again- Scattered, multitudes, arranged with no order, free to live and thrive, environment suited to a harsher life- Enjoy your time, short it may be, yet so wondrous, spectacular, miraculous gift of life- Revel in your sheer existence, for soon your petals will fall like the wind carried seeds that preceded you- Testing the mere laws of nature, able to survive where most do not, reach for the heavens, stretch your single limb- From earth, light and water do you appear, a mystery of the habitat you grow in Lower than the sky for which you reach feeding from Mother Earth and Father Sky- Owing your mere existence, to earthly parents, once again till next your kin rise and replace you as you did to kin before Warmth, a gift of the Sun, so far yet close enough to feel, radiant, bright, clear Ever wanting the touch of life that with just the absence of one, would cease Remembering a time, not that long ago, that repeats itself as it has now, once again, a mirror to the past. |
