Utter desolation
The result of war and trepidation
Where so many were slain
And survivors
Left to cry and pray
All that remains
Of the thousands who died that fateful day
Are broken trees
Swaying pitifully in the breeze
The bodies of brave soldiers are long gone
But the sadness lives on
In this barren wasteland of a place
Where the Battle of Somme once took place
