For she who forgets must now remember her tale... |
Introducing Evelyn Sinclair, called Lyn by her friends and Eve by the supernatural entities vying for her attention. An Austensian take on Gaiman...or perhaps a Gaiman-esque look at Austen is more appropriate. Essentially, Gaiman and Austen together in one story. And Eve is the main character, a struggling bookstore barista caught up in a plot as old as humanity and in way over her head. "This is a latte, not a cappuccino! For God's sake, haven't you ever made a proper drink before?" The cup slammed so hard onto the counter that the lid and several globs of foam flew into the air, landing mostly all over the dark green of her apron. Slowly and without replying, Evelyn reached up and wiped it away, glad that it had at least managed to miss her face this time.
"I'm sorry, sir, our recipe for a cappuccino calls for some milk, not just ... [Read more] Day 2: Character vs. Reputation October 7, 2011 at 11:03pm WORD COUNT: 773
Lyn couldn't remember a time that she'd been particularly popular. It seemed that she had never been aught but by herself, even when she'd been surrounded by family. They were all intellectual types. Well, to be fair, she was probably even more of an intellectual than anyone else she'd ever met; one of those intellectuals that live for knowledge, but really couldn't give a damn what kind of practical application could be had from it. And, as far as she was ... [Read more] Day 3: Family October 7, 2011 at 10:49pm WORD COUNT: 795
"You've not been calling our parents again, little sister." Lara leaned against the counter of the local deli, tattooed arms crossed over an ample chest. "Tsk tsk, Lyn. You know they don't like that."
Lyn shrugged. "I've been kind of busy."
"Busy doing what, sis? Working at the bookstore and reading through every book known to man? I know you've not been busy; you just haven't bothered to call. Are you even aware what decad... [Read more] Day 4: Word Focus November 3, 2011 at 12:26am Word Study: Blue

Lyn loves a blue sky. And blue water. It's calming, she thinks, and it helps her realize that there's a world out there to connect to. A whole spiritual world that has something to do with the spinning maelstrom inside of her; something that she desperately wants to understand and recognize.
She feels it most when she walks outside, when she is able to get out of the city and into something resembling real earth and real openness. It's a feeling ... [Read more] Day 5: Smile October 9, 2011 at 8:42pm WORD COUNT: 838

I am not prone to being serious, and yet I am the person who perhaps takes life the most seriously out of everyone one I know. To me, life is a gift; it is something to be treasured, cherished, lived fully. It is a piece of art to be appreciated and studied, every ounce of meaning to be ripped from its belly like guts for tripe. It is a song not to be listened to, but experienced, completely and with abandon. It is meant to be felt with one's sou... [Read more] Day 6: Weaknesses October 10, 2011 at 6:00pm WORD COUNT: 541
The sound of improperly steamed milk grated on her ears. It was like a mix of nails on a chalkboard and cat in heat, with a dose of hurricane-force winds buffeting a flood wall all screaming its way across the cafe and into what should have been her bibliographical heaven. "Aerate the fucking milk already," Lyn muttered, looking up from the latest Game of Thrones book and staring across the store. She was tucked into an enclave between two bookshelves placed catty-co... [Read more] Day 7: Heart November 3, 2011 at 1:01am Word Count: 970
"So...this is what exactly?" The man sitting across from Lyn glowed faintly in the light of the cafe (not the one she worked at, thankfully), golden skin sparkling and flaxen hair basking in the glow in a dance of refracting lights. He looked vaguely like the statue of David, as if he had inspired it and had the artist let him down in execution, the marble unable to adequately reflect his perfection. Young and clean-shaven, he had surprisingly green eyes that seemed to... [Read more] Day 8: Picture Prompt October 12, 2011 at 8:55pm

Lyn had never cared for cities much. She should have probably liked them more; they were filled with so much life and so much more to see and learn than the smallish town she lived in. But, full as they were, as brimming with human ideas and dreams and hopes and, yes, human fears as they were, each of those millions of people lived a life as completely isolated as if they lived alone amongst the empty buildings and burnt-out wreckage of human architectural greatness. A ... [Read more] Day 9: Sing-a-Long time! October 13, 2011 at 5:57pm Crazy by Gnarls Barkley

Lyn loved Doctor Who and lo mein nights. Also known as Saturdays with BBC America and Shanghai Tokyo Chinese and Japanese Cuisine. Occasionally, she ordered herself some General Tso to go with it, but those were usually the weeks that she had worked extra hours at the cafe and could afford such luxuries. A 2-liter of Diet Coke and a piece of Red Velvet cake finished out the night, usually well into the next program, but she never noticed.

Lyn was asleep, thankfully, or else she would have found a way to get involved in this conversation. She was like that; always getting involved with everything, letting her curiosity get the best of her. It had always been so with that one, going back to the dawn of her own existence and the existence of the world.
And she snored.
Hermes looked in on her for a moment, standing in the doorway of the room Lucifer had provided for her use, green eyes watching as her chest ... [Read more] Day 12: Introspection Time! Gods. Who would have thought that the first experience in my life that offered any sort of excitement was the single most impossible thing that could ever happen to a person? The Beatles sang that happiness is a warm gun, which is probably a metaphor for something, but I guess I'm not smart enough to get it, 'cause I definitely don't. And if it's not a metaphor, which I'm pretty sure it is, but if it isn't, I definitely don't agree.
For me, happiness is a good book. There is nothing more comforting, nothing that makes me feel safer, than escaping into the far-flung thoughts of people far more creative than they have a... [Read more] Day 14: Divinity October 18, 2011 at 4:47pm WORD COUNT: 822

"No."
Lyn stood in front of the mirror, staring at herself and at the figure of Hermes standing behind her, resplendent in his true form. He was actually glowing--staying at her apartment and living off of her belief had, apparently, been good for him--and the wings on his head and feet beat of their own accord. But as handsome as he was--and he was handsome--and as much as Lyn had grown to love him over the last few days, she was not particularly happy with him ... Lyn doesn't care about money. It's a means to pay her bills because pay her bills she must, but she has never even attempted to hide her disgust for the stuff. It was difficult for her, growing up with a family that practically worshiped the stuff, to turn away from the mighty greenback and live a more bohemian lifestyle. That was not to say that her family had a shrine to the Benjamins, or anything, but her parents had always fostered the belief that money was practic... Lyn put the phone down and turned to look at her friend. There was a furrow of flesh between his eyes, a sure sign of concern. He was a god of messages and communication, he knew what had just transpired over the line. "Hermes...my brother has cancer."
He nodded. "I heard," he replied, even as his human facade faded to reveal the powerful entity underneath. They'd all fed him their strength, Lyn suddenly remembered; that was the reason he was so easily a... [Read more] Day 18: Quote Day October 22, 2011 at 9:20pm WORD COUNT: 853

Hermes and Lucifer each turned from whatever it was they were doing to stare at Lyn. It was a waiting game these days; waiting for their enemy to do whatever it was that he was going to do. One of Lucian's servants was baking pumpkin pie.
Several families lived on the island with Lucifer. He covered their living expenses and sent their children to school; in return, they took care of everything. They cooked, cleaned, gardened, paid the taxes, ordered the food, did the laundry, everything.
Whoever was doing the baking now was a genius. Lyn was pretty sure that Lucian had heard her conversation with Hermes about Thanksgiving. This was the first time she... [Read more] Day 20: Last Words October 31, 2011 at 12:31am WORD COUNT: 1118
It was done. He was gone and I was still here, with nothing left to do and no one left to fight. The world was safe and I had been there to see it happening. Not that I was necessary in the end.
