Alice held up the beaker to the light and swirled around the light green fluid. It was a risky experiment, her professor had forbidden any use of the lab after hours without supervision after the incident last week. Her roommate had dared her to steal the professor's key and make a copy. It had been easy to do, perhaps to easy...
The shades drawn to conceal her whereabouts, the light from her workstation cast an eerie glow upon the lab. "It has to work," Alice whispered to herself. She realized the risk she was taking, getting stuck back there would surely be the end of her, but she had to try. Last week she'd left her double behind in order to come back safely herself. But leaving her double behind for good would surely cause some rift in the time-space continuum.
She poured a small amount of fluid in a vial, tucking it in her pocket for later. Saying a quick prayer and tossed back the vaporous fluid. Immediately she vanished in a faint fog. Landing with a thud in a meadow of grass she jumped up and headed back to the last place she saw her double, hoping it wasn't to late. It was dark out, but the stars lit her way. She saw the glow of the village fires in the distance. As she approached, she could hear chanting. As she got close, she crouched down behind a tree. In the middle of the fire pit she witnessed a sight that both horrified and relieved her. Her double was tied to a roasting spit and turning in the flames.
"I guess I don't have to worry about my double causing any trouble." Alice reached in her pocket, retrieved the last of the potion, going safely back home.
