I wrote this for a 4th of July program.
I wasn't there that night , when bombs lit up the sky.
When a man with pen in hand, was eagerly standing by,

To see by the light of an early dawn, when smoke had cleared the air,
If Old Glory proudly waved. Oh yes, our flag was there.

I wasn't there when he wrote it, but the words still shake my core.
Never do I hear it sang, that I'm not, right in that war.

I wasn't there on the battlefields, where countless soldiers died.
American blood stained foreign soil, while families prayed and cried.

They feared the knock, that too often came.
As a soldier stood reading their loved one's name.

I wasn't there beside them, but I thank them every one.
I never see a waving flag, that I'm not grateful for what they've done.

I wasn't there at Calvary, when the blood flowed from His side.
When the perfect sinless Lamb of God, for me was crucified.

When He saw the hopeless state of man, and said "I'll pay the price.
Then for the sins of you and me, he became the sacrifice.

I wasn't there on that day, but I've been to Calvary.
For it was there long ago, when my Savior set me free.

I wasn't there through history, when my freedoms were all bought.
But I'm the one, yes I'm the reason that these wars were fought.

For I am an American, and freedom's my birthright.
That's the driving force, when American soldiers fight.

I wasn't there when Jesus died, the story's still the same.
I'm the one, yes I'm the reason, cause He died knowing, MY name.
