Vergil had something to prove.
VERGIL’S VICTORY EDIT

“Well, good morning Percy! You ready to go out?”

Vergil had no trouble waking up to the most important day of his life. Pleased to feel well rested and rapidly rising from bed, he gave Percy a reassuring pat. Glancing at the time he knew he needed to make preparations for Percy to visit with Rex because the mountains and the climbing contest weren’t the best circumstances or place for a dog. Thinking about all the preparations necessary for this very special day, and wanting to get started immediately he stretched several times and did a little exercising which helped him relax which is vital for a climber because of the rigorous activity required.

I've just gotta' win no matter what, so I can prove there's something I'm good at doin'. I'll be back from the climbin' contest before you know it and then you’ll have

all to yourself, Percy."

A normal morning for Vergil was having a routine; getting up early, talking to his dog; or if his dog wasn't around, talking to himself, and getting ready to go climbing.

"How's the weather Percy? Lets see...Oh, empty your bladder while we're outside.”

Watching the clouds and scanning the mountain range Vergil waited for percy to signal, it's time to return inside.

"Percy, times up! Get inside, I've got to get dressed and headed to the mountain range so I'm not late for the contest, and I need time to drop you off for your visit with Rex."

Vergil hated being late for anything, especially for this very special contest, which he had been waiting for almost all of his life. Winning this contest would be proof of his ability to do something special and he could be successful. As far back as he could remember, people kept telling him what he couldn't do, he couldn't learn; was stupid, and how to live his life. He was angry with the professionals because they were supposed to help him; not look down on him because of his learning disability. He knew if he had the proper amount of time he could learn.

" No time to dwell on the past, get going before you're late. These should be perfect!” His thoughts raced and he seemed to move in slow motion.

He decided to wear his canvas climbing shirt and pants for climbing in the spring weather. Grabbing breakfast and heading for the climbing contest within equipment already in the truck Percy and Vergil started their trip. His meticulous nature resulted in Virgil having good time management skills.

"You know, Percy, I've been climbing since I was a wee little kid. I spent every second possible climbin'. School was very hard for me. Vergil shuddered as he relived the school day memories.

" I focused on being the best climber possible.” Appreciating his long arms, legs, and most importantly long fingers for grasping he was thankful for being in top athletic condition.

The mountain range was close to where Vergil lived. On the way he thought about the climb, his equipment, and keeping calm so he could think clearly:

"I love to climb and have something to prove here, so I've got to be precise. Think, think, what is your best route for this climb? What is the least amount of equipment you need, and which items are going to give you the advantage over everyone else? Only take what you absolutely need, man....I mean kiss it or you'll be lugging' extra weight." I gotta'
Keep It Seriously Simple! Common' man, don't over work this. You know what you're doin' so just relax.”

Although his body was very relaxed, Vergil was wired and ready to blast off like a rocket ship heading for mars.

"phew! I made it on time! I've got to warm up so I can really do a major grate job and win; I've got to win. If I win no one will be able to say I can't any more, or no, or you're not able, or anything like that.” Thoughts roared through his mind as he muttered to himself making certain nothing was left out of his plans.

There were 15 climbers with excellent climbing ability who entered the contest, so Vergil knew he had to concentrate and out think everyone else on the climb, go faster than everyone, and not make any mistakes. The climb was arduous and tricky, however, Vergil had studied the mountain thoroughly and planned several possible routes in advance. This is the kind of homework he enjoyed.

Vergil’s jaw dropped almost to the bottom of the mountain and adrenaline rushed through out his body because he was farther and higher than he realized.

" I can do this.” feeling the blood course through his veins he grasped the rocks and hoisted himself upward.

He looked behind him as his heart raced, he couldn't see anyone near him. For several hours all he had done was focus on climbing and making sure he didn't make any mistakes which would cost him a lot of time and energy. Breathing deeply trusting victory was in his hands, thoughts roared and raced again and his muscles quivered.

"Almost, so close, keep going, reach, reach. I can do this better, I can, I can. Think, think man, which is the best spot? Ah, this looks perfect. All I have to do is get over this little ridge and I've reached the top.” He could talk to himself all he wanted now because he was completely alone.

One more big stretch, gerr! I did it! his mind was finally able to relax and he wasn’t saying a word. Feeling like rubber stretched beyond it’s tolerance levels but retaining his balance and poise, he stood on top of the mountain as proud as a father with a new baby boy. Climbing was his baby and his passion. Vergil had invested all of his life working for this moment. He won the prestigious award for climbing the toughest mountain better and faster than any other contestant. Now he was on top of the world with his arms out stretched, standing tall, alone, and beaming from head to toe. This was his day.

"I've conquered the world! I'm a winner! See everybody! I have a brain and am able to do something extremely well! I'm not STUPID!”

Vergil was feeling uplifted and shouted for all he was worth. Reaching for the sky, and taking in the spectacular view and his time of triumph and joy in living, winning, and showing what he was able to do as a major accomplishment brought happy tears to his eyes.

"I'm an expert climber. My victory I will never forget. This is my mountain. I'm alive and full of joy doing what I love and this is the greatest gift I could ever receive. I'm finally a winner.” Taking in a huge breath he thought of his dog.

"If only Percy could see me now.”
