Prompt: "The first time she saw it, she couldn't believe her eyes."
The first time she saw it, she couldn't believe her eyes.

She had always walked into the light, wind brushing cheek,

Golden rays blessing her while she paced smoothly ahead.

She would saunter through forests, race over fields, leap over brooks,

Chasing a sure sunrise, whose beams would nourish the earth.

Looking ahead, a delighted child’s: “What’s next, Papa?”

Never fearing for future, nor longing for past,

But ready for providence and life’s open hand.

No breeze dare unleash its force, nor cloud threaten the sky;

Not while she beheld yonder Sun in her blue eyes.

In vain did darkness try to pursue, tempting her with

Imitations and sparkling synthetics: smoke and mirrors.

And then one day, spurred by a hare darting by her feet,

She glanced behind to trace his path, and – oh! What a chill

Gnawed at her bones, and fear crushed her heart, bringing knees low –

She saw for the first time that hopeless lack of all things,

That theft of sunbeams, giving nought back: it was her shadow.
