A message I will share at Mom's Funeral

Love those who might not know God love otherwise

Mom died just a little while ago. A part of me wishes that I was not so insensitive and mushy, but that is the way God made me. She had been running out of breath and the next thing we knew the race was over. She had gotten real ill on her birthday and she died today about 2:00 pm. She is missed already even as I type these words. I think the main message she would like everyone to hear is, to love those who might know love otherwise.

I am the oldest of eight children and before I knew breath she was faced with what my world would be like. She lived in a world where a person was supposed to be a good Christian and go to church. Dad and her could not wait to see me. It was like going to some super sale and standing in line before the store even opened. I was in the process of being born just before Mom was married to my dad. Most people would think nothing about it. To her it was THE SECRET. I went through a really tough time in my early twenties and she decided it was time that I knew the circumstances of my birth. It was the kind of person Mom was. I do not know how many times I heard her say that I love you but I do not like what you are doing. I think a lot of her anxiety centered around the secret that might seem foolish, especially to people in this day. She often said with humor tones that the main thing she wanted me to know was that I was loved. Her and Dad would often quip where did we get this guy from. That is how it all started.

I had three brother and four sisters that followed my birth, so I must have done something right. Mom was always wanting others to know that they needed to be in church and do the right thing. "Even if you don't I love you anyway". She raised kids according to the dictum "Share God's love with people that might not know that love otherwise. I think at times she was misunderstood to the end she had this riotous humor. I think she is laughing a smiling at the same time as she watches us from afar or maybe nearer than we think. It was hard to take things too seriously with mom was around. She was the life of the party and wanted others to be happy with her.

A crowning moment was when I was so frustrate with God mom seemed to have lost so much. She pointed to heaven with a big smile on her face. She wrote on a tablet God is what gives me hope and I want others to know that too. The basic message she have others to know is to share love that they might not know otherwise. In my mind are the family members that work with people disabled, a nurse who comforts people in the hospital, people who were married had kids and now their kids have had kids. Mom looks down on us and laughs who would have thought following one son, namely me all this blessing could happen

At my work place their assist stations. People push a button and get help. I believe that each of my brothers and sister and the families they raise are like those assist stations. I am sure the stories are endless about how people took a chance in loving them and they learned to love others who might not know God's love otherwise. That is the challenge that I leave you with to pass on to your children and your children's children. God is love. Let others know about that love. In a way it started with me so that you have me to blame. I look in the mirror and think above all mom took a chance on love and the blessing that could radiate from it. And if you see a lot of people laughing at this funeral you can blame mom. She taught us to laugh at some of the most inopportune times. In the word laughter is love. My challenge to all is to love and know laughter mom would not have it any other way.
