Yesterday, I wrote about hearing The Story perform at First Night Boston.
That was a night for new music. We walked around the outdoor displays on Boston Common, and heard this strange music. There were sheets of metal, big tubes, and old springs to play as instruments. The band providing the music used not only conventional instruments, but, yes, big tubes, old springs, and sheets of metal. The music came from the Alloy Orchestra, a band based in neighboring Cambridge.
The Alloy Orchestra now creates soundtrack music for silent films. They have recorded new soundtracks for Movies such as Nosferatu and the silent, stylized classic Metropolis. Fritz Lang's Metropolis was advanced for that time and could arguably be called the first steampunk movie.
The three videos below provide examples of their silent film work. The first one shows them at work with the instruments they use. They are the only band I know of whose members play Junk.
