Mums hate to say I told you so
“Do not give me that look, girl! I said no. He is far too old for you.”

You can’t stop me!” Beth tried not to scream in frustration.

“No,” Lauren said, pondering, “I suppose I can’t stop you. Whatever I say, you’ll do it your way anyway. But I am your mother and I care about you. You’re 17 and he’s 30: I say no. You can either respect my wishes or go against them. Either way I guess I’ll have to be here to pick up the pieces.”

“There will be no pieces to pick up – I’m in love mum!” Beth sang on her way out of the kitchen. Of course she respected her mum. But not these wishes! Not when she was in love with Mr Dreamy McDreamy.

Beth was on a mission as she trailed through the town centre looking for something to wear for Friday night. Jack was taking her to a posh restaurant. It was imperative that she lost the t-shirt and jeans. She needed to look gloriously stunning.

Wading her way through the after work shoppers in Next, she spotted him: the amazingly handsome jack. Maybe he’s looking for an outfit too, she thought, sauntering up to him.

“Hey you,” she said just before noticing the pretty woman he was chatting to. His sister perhaps, she hoped.

“Oh hey Beth,” he never normally used her actual name; awkwardness filled the atmosphere.

“Whatcha doing? Looking for an outfit for—“

“The work meal? Yes,” Jack’s eyes darted around nervously, “Kate, this is Beth – one of my employees.”

“Err hey Beth.”

“Beth this is Kate, my wife.”

Shockwaves rippled through Beth’s entire body. She must not cry!

“Seems my Mum was right…” Beth cleared her throat, “Next is too expensive for it’s own good. Excuse me.”
