Never take things for granted.
My mother fell off her chair at Wendy's,
Which is what started it all.
She lay on the floor unconscious,
As we made a hurried 911 call.

The emergency responders gave care,
As I never felt so damn helpless.
I prayed to my omnipotent God,
To relieve my poor mother's distress.

On a stretcher, they lifted her gently,
In an ambulance, she was so placed.
To the hospital with all sirens blaring,
Behind I nervously chased.

I was told to stand by while my mother,
Was intensively helped by the staff.
When I was finally allowed to see her,
I could only cry while I laughed.

She was sitting up and grinned like a cat,
Bandages like a turban on her head.
I gave her a hug and a sloppy kiss,
And thanked God that she wasn't dead.

I never took mother for granted again,
Because when everything goes awry,
We realize then it's much, much too late,
To do anything but hopelessly cry.
