A new take on an old classic, adjusted for the season |
Twas All Hallows’ Eve Twas All Hallows’ Eve, and all through the crypt Not a feature had been missed, nor spiderweb slipped The pumpkins were carved with a candle inside Awaiting the children along for the ride Children all dressed up, as demons and ghouls With a trick or treat chorus to coax sweets from fools With long flowing capes and shiny new dresses Brave Superheroes and Disney princesses Whilst out in the yard there are adults at play Acting their age as they can for one day Wrapped in their costumes, their veils and shrouds A veneer to ward off realities clouds As all children play in the light of the moon Reaping a time that is over too soon Kids of all ages, let loose off their reins With their bright pilfered candy and lewd drinking games As phantoms walk freely, and ghosts take their place Demons tread nearly, within Angels’ space Smiling grimly, yet proud of the sight Of a balance spun freely, wove into the night Nights that have drawn in, that swallow the day The plights we are born in, that wither away And hide in the shadows, forgotten till dawn Hemmed in night’s curtain, stretched out till the morn A tapestry drawn out, a treaty a truce Where everyone present can share pumpkin juice And play in the shadows, where light and dark lay “Hallows eve to all, and to all a good day!” |
