First thoughts upon arrival on Mars.
In The Beginning …

I find myself removed from home.
Above, there’s no change in the stars.
I am the one who chose to roam
to the planet known as Mars.

We have arrived at journey’s end.
We are strangers in a strange land.
This world will never be our friend
but it’s here we’ll make our stand.

I peer into the red abyss;
could this be how hell appears?
The images I can’t dismiss.
They play upon my hidden fears.

I think about our fragility
and yet I feel self-assured,
confident in our ability,
for our species had endured.

I wonder what we’ll find out there.
Could life have once existed?
A world with water, filled with air,
when the landscape wasn’t twisted?

The answers lay beyond the dome
and they won’t stay hidden long
for we will make this our new home
for our heart and spirit’s strong.
