For Goodness Sake

Always the Sun, is what they’d say;
they held their heads up every day.
The Stanglers did not sit and mope;
instead, they always hung on hope.

They knew about adversity,
this average New York family.
Yet bad things did not get them down;
the thought of sadness made them frown.

To help them keep their spirits high,
each used an earwurm* to get by.
This little fragment of a tune
could turn December into June.

Although the music helped a lot,
a little extra help was sought.
They talked to sorrow and forlorn,
and when they did, some good was born:

  We’d like to see you drive on by
  because despairing makes us cry.
  Hit any road you choose to take;
  your sadness hurts, for goodness sake.
