A poem about miracles medical and divine. Third place in the Lighthouse Poetry Contest. |
Miracles In 2016, I think it was, I had my second heart attack, Or maybe there were more that passed unnoticed. In hospital they tore apart my ribs, Borrowed tubes from leg and sternum, Made new arteries to keep the old pump going. A plumbing job, you could declare and that’s the truth behind the skill Of hands that knew their trade. A modern miracle they cry abroad And, in truth, I feel better now than I have for years. But the real thing happened in 1983 when torn ligaments And a useless knee were made anew by prayer. That knee still functions better than its corresponding partner As well it should (I think, at least), being a good thirty-five years younger. And come the day my time is done, my old bones and aches consigned, With one good knee, unto the grave, be aware, my friend, that skill is human But His touch is life eternal. And so to the point: My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart And my portion forever.
