A reflection on times past.
Halloween in the Pumpkin Patch

I stand with Linus in the pumpkin patch,
in darkest night awaiting
the arrival of our hero bright,
Great Pumpkin, lord of Hallows.

Yes, my reference here is to
that cartoon of the sixties,
belovéd Peanuts, Charlie Brown,
Snoopy, Lucy, Pigpen.

But most of all is Linus, see,
philosopher and dreamer too,
and even though our quest is doomed,
I’ll stay with him in hope.

In modern times, yon Pumpkinhead
is evil, fearsome and profane,
a warped and bitter mirror self
of the valiant Great Pumpkin.

Lost cause, you’d say and be correct,
but an underdog supporter, I
maintain that winning’s not the game
if all that’s good is the price of it.

Come, stand with us in the pumpkin patch,
uphold the long lost innocence
of a bygone age when Halloween
meant saints and angels, heroes too.

But soft,
what light from yonder moon doth break?
Well, there ya go,
Great Pumpkin’s on his way.
