Dragon poem for children. For DreamTime Dragon's Poem Contest, February, 2020. 3rd place.
Purple Plush

“I used to believe in forever, but forever's too good to be true”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

By day I’m a dinosaur,
purple with green polka dots,
plush, soft, but you make me roar
to frighten the blue robot.

So passes the time in play
till supper heralds the end.
All us toys now put away
and you to the bed will wend.

But at night I’m a dragon,
enormous, golden and fierce.
To defend you is my passion,
breath ablaze your foes to pierce.

In dreams we ride the dark airs,
my wings powering the flight,
eyes seeking the griffin’s lair,
the quest to challenge his might.

Through the night we battle on,
your armour glows and sword bright,
my scales brazen, sharp talons,
villains fleeing from the sight.

Damsels freed and wrongs arighted,
evil shattered, boundaries drawn,
all our enemies smited,
till the skies give way to dawn.

Now the weary pair part ways,
one to bound from sleep renewed,
the other readying his play
purple plush again his mood.
