Review of a book about a Foster child, the struggles both she and her Foster parents have.
I have to say, I wasn’t at all sure as to what I was about to read as I began this book. I won’t say it isn’t disturbing, because in many ways it is. However, this isn’t just for the obvious reasons, but for general attitudes which are brought out in this book, assumptions made, which tarnish the reputations of people. Some are well founded, others misunderstood, some things can be changed and have a reason, of course there are some that cannot.
It is often our ignorance that makes us decide what is happening. How many of us would make different decisions in life if we had all the facts? This book brings out all our fears, all our uncertainties about things we don’t understand. In the midst of it all is a small child trying to navigate what’s happening to her at that moment, and Foster parents trying to navigate this with her, with limited knowledge of all the circumstances.
I have to say, it’s a beautiful but gritty book, at times frightening, but written with such tenderness. I would definitely recommend this book if only to learn something new, but it’s a difficult read at times.
